Powering a Future with Solar Innovation

SunPower’s heritage includes high-efficiency silicon cells used on NASA/AeroVironment solar aircraft such as Pathfinder and Helios. Those projects demonstrated what solar can do at the edge of the atmosphere and continue to influence how we design for performance on the ground.

Discover Our Vision for Tomorrow’s Energy

At SunPower, we believe the future of energy lies in harnessing the sun’s unlimited potential. Inspired by the groundbreaking NASA Helios solar-powered airplane, our mission is to deliver cutting-edge solar solutions that redefine what clean energy can achieve.

The Legacy of Helios: A Symbol of Solar Power and Innovation

Helios was a remotely piloted, solar-electric flying wing with a 247-foot wingspan—longer than a Boeing 747’s. On August 13, 2001, it reached 96,863 feet, a world record for sustained horizontal flight by a winged aircraft. Helios carried roughly 65,000 high-efficiency SunPower solar cells capable of producing over 35 kW under peak sun.

From Helios to High-Altitude Platforms

Today’s high-altitude platform systems (HAPS) apply similar principles: solar by day, batteries by night, enabling long-duration stratospheric flight for connectivity and sensing. Airbus’s AALTO Zephyr program reported a continuous flight of 67 days in 2025, surpassing its prior endurance record. These are aircraft, not satellites, but they can deliver satellite-like services.

A Vision for SunPower’s Future

SunPower adopted the Helios logo as a nod to the NASA aircraft and the engineering mindset it represents efficiency, lightweight design, and pushing limits responsibly.

In 2025, SunPower’s CEO and Chairman, T.J. Rodgers, outlined goals to support the company’s continued growth, technical leadership, and profitability, drawing on his extensive experience and long-standing commitment. Having led the original SunPower through its public offering in 2005 and observed its growth to $1.52 billion in revenue by 2009, Rodgers brings historical perspective and a renewed focus on engineering excellence. He also recognizes the dedication and contributions of SunPower’s employees and looks forward to the journey ahead.

A Vision for SunPower’s Future

I was the chairman of the original SunPower when it came public in 2005 and stayed with that company until May 2010, when the company was taken over by the French oil company, Total, and I resigned. In 2009, SunPower’s revenue was $1.52 billion. My vision is to return the new SunPower to $1 billion-plus revenue, solid profitability and technical leadership. I am very proud of the sacrifices our employees have made to achieve this rapid progress, and I also recognize the long road in front of us."
