NFL Doing a Super Job With Solar Stadiums

February 4, 2016

Levi's Stadium is one of three NFL stadiums that have SunPower's high efficiency solar panels.

While everyone is getting excited about the biggest football game of the NFL season, set for Sunday in Santa Clara, Calif., we at SunPower are proud that the game will take place at Levi’s® Stadium, the first NFL stadium to achieve LEED Gold certification.

Earning that highly coveted energy and environmental design certificate is pretty significant given that Levi’s Stadium uses enough electricity during one game to power 400 homes for an entire month.

There are 1,186 high efficiency SunPower® solar panels installed at the home of the 50th big game, generating enough solar in a year to meet electricity demand during every San Francisco 49ers home game.

But Levi’s isn’t the only NFL playing field using solar technology. Read more in this Solar Energy Industries Association blog post by Rhone Resch about the greening of the National Football League. And click here for some fun facts about solar at professional football fields.

In total, a third of the NFL’s teams play or train at stadiums with on-site solar panels. In addition to Levi’s, two others utilize SunPower solar panels: FedEx Field, home to the Washington Redskins in Maryland, and Gillette Stadium in Massachusetts, where the New England Patriots are based.

And it's not just the NFL that's going solar. According to a SEIA study of solar in professional sports, "The total cumulative capacity in professional sports has reached 25.4 megawatts, enough to power more than 3,100 American homes...Together, the solar systems installed at sports facilities across the United States offset nearly 22,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide, the equivalent of planting well over half a million trees or taking 5,000 cars off the road.
