Using Your System

In general, your SunPower Equinox system requires no day-to-day operation on your part. During the day, your system automatically produces solar energy to power your home. On cloudy days, your solar panels still produce energy, although output may be lower than days with abundant sunshine.

At night, when your solar system isn't producing electricity, your home will be powered by grid electricity from your utility just as it was before you went solar. When sunlight returns, solar energy produced by your system will automatically begin powering your home again. If you have SunVault™ Storage, you can set your system to power your home in the evenings and overnight instead of using grid electricity.

Anyone who's gotten sunburned on a cloudy day knows that solar radiation penetrates clouds. For that same reason, solar panels can still produce electricity on cloudy days. But depending on cloud cover and the quality of the solar panels, output can drop to anywhere from 10-25%. Fortunately, SunPower cells capture a broader range of sunlight—including red and blue wavelengths for those savvy solar folks keeping track—to make more energy on cloudy days than conventional panels.

Maintaining Your System

Your SunPower Equinox system requires little to no regular maintenance. And seasonal rain and snowmelt usually wash off any dirt or build-up that accumulates from normal weather conditions. But if your area receives little precipitation or has dusty, windy weather, you may need to occasionally clean your panels. Some homeowners are able to do this themselves or they may choose to have them professionally cleaned.

How often do solar panels require cleaning?

Again, nature may take care of the routing cleaning for you. But keep an eye on your monthly energy bill or mySunPower monitoring app. If you see a noticeable drop in production, it might be time for a quick clean. As a general rule, cleaning your system once or twice a year should be sufficient.

Should I call a professional?

Just like washing your car or cleaning your home, you can hire a professional to clean your solar panels. If you have a rooftop system, it may a good idea to call a professional cleaning service. Professionals are properly equipped for rooftop safety and already have the necessary materials. If you choose to clean the panels yourself, never get on the roof and avoid using abrasive chemicals or brushes.

Cleaning Tip

Always clean solar panels in the early morning or evening when the panels are cool. In high heat, water and soap can evaporate quickly, leaving streaks and smears. For safety reasons, stay on the ground or call a professional cleaner to do it for you. If you're not sure what to do, call SunPower Support at 833-410-2382 and we'll be happy to help you out.
