FedEx Goes Solar with SunPower

In pursuing environmental benefits and energy savings, FedEx’s Oaklandhub is now a bold example of the advantages of solar power for theenvironment and the bottom line.

The FedEx Express hub at Oakland International Airport clearly demonstrates the company’s firm commitment to the environment by operating a 904 kW solar array. The81,000-square-foot installation produces the majority of the facility’s peak energy load, reduces heating and cooling costs by insulating the roof, and extends roof life. Thanks to SunPower’s low-maintenance system, 10,800 tons of carbon dioxide emissions will be eliminated over the next 30 years—the equivalent of planting 3,000 acres of trees or removing 2,100 cars from the road.

MAJOR LOGISTICS HUB WORKS WITH SUNPOWER TO MEET ENVIRONMENTAL GOALS
The FedEx Express Oakland hub is a 350,000-square-foot facility that employs1,700 people to handle 85 flights and 260,000 packages a day. FedEx researched how to meet some of the facility’s energy requirements with renewable power, and concluded that SunPower PowerGuard® solar roof tiles were the best way to both lower electricity costs and improve the regional environment. “With this project, FedExwill deliver more environmental innovation to California,” said Mitch Jackson, the Managing Director for Corporate and International Environmental Programs.

SUSTAINABILITY REAPS SIGNIFICANT AND LONG-LASTING SAVINGS
The solar array provides 80% of the facility’s peak energy load, generating enough electricity to power over 900 homes. The system also covers 81,000 square feet of previously unutilized rooftop, protecting the roof from heat and UV rays as well as extending roof life. The PowerGuard tiles also provide thermal insulation for the roof, which reduces both heating and cooling costs.

SMART POWER AND SMART DESIGN
FedEx elected to use PowerGuard solar roof tiles. Made of high-efficiency solar cellsthat generate up to 50% more electricity than conventional cells, PowerGuard tiles feature interlocking tongue-and-groove sides that both reduce installation times andprovide resistance to wind without mechanical fasteners.
