“SunPower commercial roof systems offer an affordable way for Macy’s to reduce operating costs and lower energy consumption by using clean, renewable solar power.”
– Dan Edelman, Chief Operating Officer, Macy’s West
Macy’s installation of SunPower PowerGuard and SunPower T10 Solar Roof Tile atop 30 stores—in addition to significant energy efficiency upgrades—makes it the largest solar and energy efficiency initiative of any national retailer to date.
It all started in the fall of 2006 when Macy’s executives took advantage of the state-funded California Self-Generation Incentive Program (SGIP), which offered incentives to companies using solar power. "Macy’s is proud to join the fight against greenhouse gas emissions in California, and we’re very excited about the project,” said Marc Gordon, Vice President of Operations at Macy’s West. “By combining the use of solar with energy efficiency upgrades, Macy’s can enjoy substantial financial returns while benefiting the environment."
Power Purchase Agreement Enables More Soar Power
For 17 of the 30 stores, Macy’s is purchasing solar-generated electricity under a SunPower solar power purchase agreement, a solar services agreement that allows the retailer to purchase just the electricity generated at its stores—not the solar power systems themselves—from a third-party financier. With no capital investment, at the end of a 10-year term, Macy’s will have the option to renew the agreement, transfer the equipment to a new site, or buy the system. Macy’s will buy solar power systems for the remaining 13 stores through an outright system purchase.
Project Makes Huge Impact on Environment
Macy’s executives were impressed with the ease of working with the SunPower team. “We appreciate how well our teams work together, as well as the level of service SunPower has provided to ensure our efforts remain on-track,” said Gordon. And the ongoing environmental impact of the project is substantial. The combined SunPower roof solar power systems will help to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 195 million pounds over 30 years, which is equivalent to planting 27,400 acres of trees or removing 19,500 cars from our roads.
